The Correlation Between Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension

This thesis is entitled “The Correlation Between Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension”. In this study the writer observed the teaching learning process of the correlation between vocabulary and reading comprehension at SMA 4 Lampineung. Vocabulary which is very important for student because it is considered a basic element in language. The objectives of this research are to identify correlation between students’ mastery in vocabulary and reading comprehension, to identify students’ ability in vocablulary test and also to know if students get difficulty in mastering reading test. The method used was co relational studies to find out relationships between variables. The sample of the research is 62 students based on porposive sampling. The instruments are two tests, vocabulary tests and reading comprehension test with multyple choice and both tests consist of 25 questions. The testing of alternative hypothesis (H(satu)) be received the trust, it means the correlation between vocabulary mastery (variable x)  and reading comprehension (variable y) have a positive correlation, which means that 0.79 is between 0.70 to 0.090 (there is a high correlation) and the null hypothesis is rejected. The second alternative hypothesis (H2) is also accepted. Finally, we can say that is important for the teacher make the students realize that vocabulary has significant correlation in reading comprehension.

Increasing Students’ Ability On Phrasal Verbs By Using Songs

This thesis entitled “Increasing Students’ Ability On Phrasal Verbs By Using Songs” the writer applied experimental teaching at SMAN 1 Nisam Aceh Utara. The objective of this study  is to know whether using song in teaching English can increase students’ ability on phrasal verbs or not.  The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. The population and the sample were taken from SMAN 1 Nisam Aceh Utara. The writer taught two classes, 1a as the experiment class and 1b as the control class. The writer conducted experimental teaching at four meetings. The vocabulary test result was analyzed by using some statistical formula that are range of data, amoutn of interval class, length of interval class, mean, standard deviation, variance and t(score). The result of study shows that t(score) is 9.85 and t(tabel) is 1.67/ t(score) is higher than t(table). It mean that the alterntive hypothersis is accepted. In conclusion, using songs can increase students’ abilitty on phrasal verbs.

The Application of KTSP Curriculum of the First Level of Senior High School in Reading Skill

This thesis is entitled “The Application of KTSP Curriculum of the First Level of Senior High School in Reading Skill” the research was conducted at MAN Model and SMA 1 Banda Aceh. The both schools have been applied KTSP. MAN Model is under Religion Educational Affair whereas SMA 1 Banda Aceh is under Educational Affair.  The purpose of this research is to know what extent is the application of KTSP curriculum at MAN Banda Aceh different with that at SMA 1 Banda Aceh. The methodelogy of this research had been done by doing two different kinds of collecting data, those are: interview and observation. The writer took  headmaster and two English teachers at first level from each school. The result of research indicated that there are several differentiation ways applying KTSP in the both schools. All of English  teachers at first level in SMA 1 Banda Aceh have been trained KTSP whereas in MAN Model only one English teacher at first level has been trained KTSP. Not all of English teachers from SMA 1 applied KTSP curriculum in teaching reading. English Teachers in MAN Model applied more method than teachers in SMA 1 in teaching reading. SMA 1 faced several human’s factor problems but MAN Model faced device problems in applying KTSP. One of English teachers at SMA does not understand about KTSP completely and still apply 1994 curriculum but MAN Model has not multimedia room to support teaching learning.

Students’ Strategies in Understanding Listening Section of Paper-based TOEFL Tests

This thesis is entitled “The Students’ Strategies in Understanding Listening Section of Paper-based TOEFL Tests” (A Study at the Second Year Students of English Department of Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Ar-Raniry). This study was intended to find out the strategies used by students in understanding listening section of Paper-Based TOEFL tests. The population of this study was the students of English Department of Tarbiyah Faculty of IAIN Ar-Raniry. The sample of this study was the second year students of English Department who have followed the Paper-Based TOEFL tests from May to June 2009. The techniques used were document analysis, questionnaire and interview. Document analysis was done in English Department of Tarbiyah Faculty. While questionnaire and interview were directly given to students. Based on the result of the study, it was found several strategies that were helpful for the students in handling listening section of the test. The strategies are focus on alternative answers while instructions and questions are read, focus on subject in the alternative answers, try to predict question that will be asked and try to grasp the main idea of the conversation.
